Rubber paving on Driveways and Patios

Driveways and patios have been paved traditionally with concrete, asphalt or tiles. Periodic repairs are needed as a consequence of corrosive liquids or water making a constant erosion of this paving what in combination with the strength of pedestrian or vehicle transit generates cracks with functional and visual impact.

There are several specialized companies and franchises with proven techniques using sealants to repair cracks and joints and some are also introducing new successful and lovely solutions based on recycled rubber for paving on these areas with extended life, non-slip properties, a lot of colour options and seamless appearance.

These companies install recycled rubber granules, sometimes combined with stones, and a binder to repair and resurface areas with cracked asphalt or concrete. The rubber can be of different colours and can be installed on top of the existing old asphalt or concrete, which saves money.

At CONICA we have been, a few times, asked to recommend a system for this kind of applications using rubber, stone carpets or blends of stones and recycled rubber.

Stones are normally purchased from local suppliers and can have a wide dispersion in quality between different countries and suppliers, so it’s difficult to do a recommendation when only supplying the binder and the rubber.

We also offer some full system solutions of rubber-stone-binder at our subsidiary Playtop and from CONICA Ltd. at some Countries .

Driveways and patios need a combination of elasticity and high abrasion resistance and to achieve both properties the quality, the type and the grain size of the stones as well as the procedures and the proportions of the mix of rubber, stones and binder are key.

Our CONICA Product Manager for Industrial and Decorative flooring has tested a lot of these solutions based in stones and seen the significant influence of a large number of factors. Our conclusion is that, as a binder supplier, we are unable to test all possible local variants of the different materials, types, procedures and proportions.

The application of rubber solutions on driveways, sidewalks and patios is a really good fit considering the requirements and performance of the rubber, but if you are a supplier or an installer of these systems, you must carefully test your full solution with the specific recipe, procedures and the local materials you use. Is what we also did for our full systems supplied by our companies.

Take care
